Parker’s mood. Emotional atmospheres and musical expressiveness in jazz

Alessandro Bertinetto

Abstract

This paper offers an exploratory theoretical attempt to apply the notion of musi- cal atmosphere to the aesthetic experience of jazz as audio-tactile improvisatory music. This helps understand jazz-specific expressiveness, on the one hand, avoid- ing the reductionism of Levinson’s recent proposal and, on the other hand, devel- oping his theory of the musical persona.
